It started as an idea while sitting at a craft show and it quickly consumed us!! We are so happy to be doing it though and have met wonderful people (and a few nuts) because of it.

We (4 ladies) host a vendor shopping event each month at a select location. We average around 35-40 vendors. We bring in food, wine tasting, massages, etc. You bring in your gift list!! In addition to the vendor tables, we have a silent auction table.

All of our proceeds are donated to a team or group. We recently did an event for the Susan G Komen MN Affiliate and in August are doing an event for a local 3 day Walk team!

HUGE Dahlias and the Mpls Farmer's Market

Tina and I eyeballed some HUGE Dahlias on Friday evening at a tailgating party prior to the Twin's game. We inquired about them and were told to look for them at the Mpls Farmers Market on the wknds.

So....................this morning at the wonderful time of 5:30 am, I pulled into Tina's and picked her up. Off we were to the Market. As expected, we were some of the first shoppers there, but it worked to our advantage. We were able to walk around and check out all the items and then make our selections. We also got the freshest stuff as it hadn't been sitting there all day.

We spotted the Dahlia's from a distance and booked it over to them. Upon talking with the seller, we discovered that they can be split in the fall when dug up for the winter. We settled on 4 different colors, each of us getting 2 to start. In the fall, we will divide them. The blooms are enormous! Honestly, they are the size of a dinner plate. 10 inches across. Just beautiful. I will post pictures when they bloom.

We also ended up with lettuce, spinach (see the previous post to know why I needed to buy these), peas, onions, cheese curds, jewelry, and more.

All in all, a good trip. We were happy that we had went so early. By 7:30 when we were leaving, it was starting to get busy.

Rascally Wabbits

I somehow made it through last years gardening with no rabbits.

This year however, is not going well. The little varmits have eaten all of my lettuce and broccoli. Today's task is to find something that will get rid of them. I can't very well be shooting at them with neighbor's around. I don't want to poison them as there are too many pets around here. A trip to Pahls is in order to see what all they have available. If they don't have anything strong enough, I will look at Gander Mountain for Fox Pee or something of the sort.

Pampers Wipes:
There is a $2/1 mfg out there from the inserts. You can find them on Ebay and at select clipping sites. The wipes are a little over $2 at Target and are $1.97 at WalMart.

Canning Lids are clearanced. Currently 30% off at the stores by me. Makes 12 narrow lids $1.06 and 12 wide lids $1.49.

Asian seasoning mixes (in the little pouches) are clearanced 50% off. I think I paid .48 each??

Seasoning section (jars/plastic containers) is being reset. Lots of stuff for 30 - 50% off.

Kashi Autumn something cereal is clearanced to $2.04. There are $1/1 peelies on the boxes in the regular aisle. Makes for some cheap, good cereal.

Milk. Let's talk Milk. I was at Super Walmart in Faribault on Thursday. Thought I would get some milk. Thought again when I looked at the price. $2.99 for a gallon???? I just paid $2.09 at Target. Both were store brands.

Noticed lots of picture frames and framed art clearanced along with beach towels.

Christmas Clearance

Stopped into Target yesterday (before getting the call that a little girl was throwing up), and found that the Christmas area was 75% off. It was packed with people and product. In fact, it looked like it did before Christmas! Aisles and aisles of stuff.

I left it all. I am still working my way thru 90% off wrapping paper and gift bags from a few yrs ago!!

Toys have also begun their markdowns. Target resets each dept twice a yr and toys are done in January and July. Most of the clearanced toys were 50% off, but will go 75% off in a few weeks.

One that I did notice was the Smart Cycle Extreme for $44.xx and the games were $14.xx. Other than that, I did not look too closely. 50% off is meaningless for me.

Let's see...November and December were very good for Scentsy sales. January is fast approaching and will be twice the 1/2 off items for hostess'. A great time to stock up on gifts for cheap!!

Oh Cub. I rarely go to this store. It is just too expensive. However, yesterday, I needed a few items for Christmas at grandmas and decided to just run to Cub instead of Target. I should have known better. On my list: items for little reubens.

Christmas Clearance has started at Target. I am only looking for a tree though. I think I have paper from 3 yrs ago when it went 90% off yet!!! Clearance is currently at 50% off and it looks like it does not include the colored totes this time around.

There is a Tide Stain Remover cpn in the PG insert today that is a good one. They are on sale for $5 at WalMart and the cpn is a $3/1.

October is Fire Prevention Month

Every year over 18,000 fires are started by careless candle users. 150 people die in those fires and over $500 Million of damage is done. Crazy huh??

A company called Scentsy Wickless has a solution though. Their products are completely safe. The system consists of a warmer and a chunk of wax. The warmers are heated with a low voltage, 25 watt lightbulb. It is plenty of heat to melt the wax. The wax is a food grade pariffin wax that has a low melthing point. When fully melted, the wax will not get above 125 degrees. What this means is, even if a child spills the wax on their skin, it won't burn them. Regular candle wax can, and often does, cause 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Just because you have kids, pets, or are clumsy doesn't mean that you can't have a good smelling house!! With 80 scents and warmers that fit any decor, they are perfect for everyone!!

I also found them for .99/lb at the Bloomington WalMart that just re-opened. I hae about 5 lbs here that need to be jammed up. Maybe tonight yet.

Grandma found lugs (14lbs) of pears at Hunts in Faribault for $6. Killer price on them!! I can't share a recipe for the pears b/c she is going to can them while we are at the cabin.!

Saturday, I was at Sams Club and found the boneless pork tendorloins for $1.89/lb. They are just plain, not marinaded.

I picked up a 9 lb one for $12.xx. I cut it into smalller pieces, vacuumed sealed it, and froze it.

For a price comparison, Cub has the marinaded tenderloins for $6.99. I think they are 24 oz? Not a very good comparsion since I am not 100% sure on their price! But, I do know that the Sam's price is the cheapest I have seen it in a long time.

Time flies! We had a crazy busy week last week with a garage/bake sale, canning, rental turn overs, and life in general!

Today, we were equally busy, but I did want to share a recipe.

Chocolate Zucchini Bread:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1 1/2 cups shredded zucchini
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup chocolate chips

Combine all ingredients EXCEPT for the zucchini and chocolate chips. Mix until blended, either by hand or with a mixer. Fold in the zucchini and the chocolate chips. Pour into a greased bread pan.

Bake for 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
* I used 2 zucchini and ended up with 6 cups of zucchini. I made 4 loaves total and will freeze them.
* Do not peel the zucchini, just shred it up!

A while back, live.com did a cashback along with Ebay. I got some Cub gift cards from Ebay for around 25% off the face value. I got Starbucks gift cards for around 33% off face value. It was perfect timing. It was around Christmas when the coffee is greatly needed around here!!!

Anyways, www.bing.com is doing cashback right now. Go to the site, type in what you are looking for. I did Nike. A list comes up with all the stores. Click on the one that has the CASHBACK logo next to it. I am pretty sure it was the Eastbay store for this search. Look thru the stuff, get great prices.

While in Rainbow earlier this week, I checked on their baking supplies. They had 25lb bags of flour. The Roundy's brand. The price? $11.56 a bag.

I paid $6.68 today at Sam's. Much better!!!!

$3.49 Finish/Electrasol dishwasher tabs. There is a $2.50/1 mfg insert out there. They go for big bucks on Ebay, but if you can find some on a clipping site, they are worth it. Makes them .99 a box!!!

Cabin Trip

Last week, a coupon came out in the inserts for Pampers. It is a Target cpn, but is not printable.

$3 off when you buy Pampers diapers and wipes (160ct).

The expiration date is well into October, so I went ahead and order a bunch off of Ebay. I figured that at some point between now and October, they will do a gift card deal on Pampers Jumbos.

Let's say that the deal is Buy 2, get a $5 gift card.

9.99 x 2 = $19.98
Minus $2 mfg insert x 2 = -$4

That alone puts it at $15.98 for 2 jumbos. Minus the $5 gift card makes it $10.98. Now minus the $3 and you are at $7.98.

You do need to buy the wipes, but there are usually decent wipe cpns out there too.

Growing up, we had a chicken coop. Everyone did. It was a common thing. The chicken coop at the farm has now become the trappers shack, but it started as the chicken coop all the same.

With the economy the way it is and constant reports of poison in our processed foods, more people are looking to go organic or at least cut down on their "carbon footprint". Chicken coops seem to be popping up more and more. Not just in rural areas. No one in a rural area is going to build a special chicken coop. The chickens would be tossed into an old out building that isn't being used. But in urban areas, that doesn't cut it. I haven't seen any being built in my neighborhood, but I have read quite a few articles about coops being built.

I stumbled across THIS SITE along the way. For those that don't know how a chicken coop works, plans can be bought online. Crazy!! Too bad we didn't think of it first! We could be rich. Think anyone is interested in trapper shack plans??????

So you have the chickens, now what? No worries!! There is a book about that too!!! Learn everything you need to know about chickens! It is funny to think that there are people out there that don't know about chickens, but I guess it could happen!

Pie Crust Update

What a task!! Or mess!!

The KitchenAid Artesian wasn't big enough. I had to divide the dough in 1/2 and go from there.
I also ended up adding about 1 cup more of flour. The dough was just too creamy without it.

I did get 20) 7.5 oz balls out of this batch. I have 19 of them flash freezing in the freezer. I kept one out to make a pie with.

- The dough did roll out, but not as nicely as I would like. It was sticky. I ended up putting the dough in the pie plate and pushing it out from the middle with my hands.
- I used a 9 inch regular depth pie pan. I think next time I make the dough, I will do 9 oz balls. The 7.5 oz wasn't quite enough. I like a little bit more dough to work with.

All in all, an easy recipe, and it could save a lot of time. At .29 for each ball of dough, I can't really complain. Plus, in looking at the dough, it will be flakey enough to use for a pot pie recipe.

Pie Crust Recipe

I stumbled across a pie crust recipe today that makes 20 crusts.

3 lb can Crisco vegetable shortening (I use Butter-Flavored Crisco)
5 lb all-purpose flour (I sub. 1-2# of the a/p flour with white bread flour)
3 cups ice water
2 Tbsp. salt

Mix in a very large bowl or pan (I use my Bosch with the dough hook).Blend flour, salt, and Crisco together (by hand if necessary).Add ice water and mix all together just until blended.Form into patties weighing approx. 7.6 oz. each (if you have a scale and want to get 20 out of the recipe). Makes about 18 to 20

Price Break Down:
Crisco: $4.49 for 3lb butter flavor (Cub was the only store that had the flavored)
Flour: $1.10 for 5lbs at WalMart
Water and Salt are considered free

$5.59 / 20 = .28 each

Compare that to well over a $1 each frozen at the store.

I am going to mix up a batch of this tomorrow morning and will let everyone know how it goes. I plan on weighing them out, forming the chunk of dough into a rough ball and then flattening a bit. I will place them on cookie sheets and flash freeze them right away. Once they are solid, I will combine them all into 1 or 2 Ziploc's. When needed, simply remove from the freezer and let sit for 30 minutes or so until thawed.

Coupon to buy: If you buy cpns, get a hold of some Chinet $2/1 mfg ones. They are on Ebay. The plates are on sale for $2.25 next week at Cub, so .25 after the coupon.

I was out and about today with the neighbor and she had to stop at Rainbow. I don't usually shop there, but I did get a turkey (to deep fry) and a watermelon. I also needed french fries, so I checked on those. They had a 3 lb bag for $5.99. That is $1.99/lb. I passed on them, and I am so glad that I did. After we were done, home, unloaded, and such, I went out to return a pair of jeans to Kohls and a tool to Ace. From there, I stopped at Sam's Club. They had the same cut of french fries in an 8 lb bag for $5.49. It comes to .68/lb. Much better!!!

Have you seen the new Purex laundry sheets that have the detergent and the softener on them? You just toss the sheet in the wash machine.

I priced them today at Target and they were $5.99 for a 20pk of one scent, and $5.99 for a 24 pk of 3 in 1. It will run you about .30 per load.

Bake at 350 until potatoes are golden brown.

Coupon usage

Often, while I am checking out at the store, I am talking with the cashier. A question that generally comes up is if they have seen an increase in coupon usage in the last few months.

Some cashiers will say yes. Some will say no, they have always seen a lot of coupons come thru, and some are just dense when it comes to coupons.

Typically, the person behind me in line starts asking about where I get all my coupons. I refer them to Ebay and to clipping sites. It amazes me that most people don't know that you can buy coupons.

I was reading an article online this morning about how different stores compared in prices and service. It was an interesting read, but I didn't agree with all the info stated.

My stores would rate more like this:
Target: Very in line, if not cheaper, than the groceries and SWM (super walmart) here in the metro. With the combination of store coupons and mfg coupons, many items can be free. Super Targets are always clean, and rarely do I have an issue with an item being out of stock. Produce and meat are always fresh and in good condition. The employees are helpful and pleasant and there are always enough lanes open. They are testing Price Matching in a few districts, and hopefully it will become the norm.

SWM: I don't shop here often, but I am pleased with the prices. I am a ways away from the nearest one, but there is talk of building on closer. I hope that they do. Their system does freeze up and require a CSM Override if you use more than $50 in coupons, which can be a pain, but it only takes a short amount of time for the CSM to come over and do their thing. They will price match with a stores ad.

Cub: I admit, I don't shop there often. Most of my shopping is at Target. Cub does run some good sales though. However, they are high priced on certain items. Take Ocean Spray Juice. A few weeks ago, Target had the juice at a regular price of $1.99 + there was a store cpn out for it. Exact same jug of juice was regular price $3.99 at Cub. I do like that they have an inhouse butcher and fresh meat counter. Typically, they have enough cashiers working.

Sams Club: Even with the $40/yr membership, I love this store. Bulk works for me, esp in the baking ingrediant area. Eggs, milk, flour, sugar, cereal, etc is far cheaper than other stores. Yes, you may have to have some extra room to store the packages in your house, but it is worth it. Not only do you go to the store less, but by buying in bulk, you cut down on individual packaging waste. The downfall to this store is that there are never ever enough cashiers working. Ever. You can't use coupons either. But their produce and meat are outstanding in quality. If you upgrade your membership to the $100/yr one, you are given a complentary health card. It is a health discount program that is free to you with your membership at Sams. It covers a lot of services that typical insurance doesn't. For example, my father in law needed a crown done on a tooth. His insurance covered none of it, but thru the discount program, he saved $400+ on that one crown. Totally worth his $100/yr membership. Oh, and their pizza, YUM!!!

Bottom line: Know your stores. Know their prices. If you need to, take a notebook to the stores and make a list of the items you use on a regular basis and their prices. Keep it as a reference. After all, it is your money!!!

Under 10% of all coupons printed are redeemed. Mfg's know what they are doing. They know that they can put out higher amount coupons and still be ok, b/c most of those cpns won't be redeemed.....................unless I get ahold of them!!!!

This past summer we took a week long vacation with my family and headed out west. We saw Devils Tower.

And Mt. Rushmore

This Feburary, my brother and I had the privlage of seeing Stone Mountain with our dad, who had been there long ago while in the service.

Gas last summer, while we were in South Dakota was $4.00/gallon. A $2/gallon difference from right now.

We will go back to South Dakota in a few years when the girls can understand the history behind it all.

One day, I will go back to Stone Mountain. It was beautiful. It was too windy for us to take the tram to the top of the mountain, so we need to go back. Plus, I want my kids to see that. It was amazing.

Why wait? I read a little tid-bit of info about different countries and how much time people spend on vacations. In the USA, it is 14 days a year. In Italy, it is 56 days a year. Of course, these are averages. Why spend your entire life working your tail off, only to die and not be able to take anything with you? Why not adopt the moto: "Make a living..............living." ?

Today's Plantings

Today we planted the carrots, lettuce, radish's, and some peas. It went fairly quickly as the carrots, lettuce, and radish's came on strips of paper.

The peas, are nice big seeds, so easy.

I will need to get the fence up on the outside of the boxes now. The salad bar for rabbits has been planted!!

Painting Tiles

Has anyone ever done this? I am thinking that instead of tearing out the tile in the bathroom, I am going to paint it. After reading up on it, it seems fairly straight forward. Clean, sand, clean, prime, paint.

Here is my trouble though. The tile around the top of the shower (from the ceiling to the top of the shower/tub unit) are white. The floor is a light beige. The sink and counter are an off white and the woodwork is oak. So what do I do with the tile? Do I paint it white to match the tile above the shower? I am thinking if I do that, it will be too bright for the counter top. I would love to paint it a color, but I just don't think that will work with the white tile above the shower. I don't care to paint that. It is just the mauve nonsense that I want to get rid of.

A new baby was born at the farm last week. We were expecting a birth, but weren't sure when it would happen.

This little fella was born on Tuesday. By the time we got there, he was about 2 hrs old and was still figuring out the whole walking thing.

He has been named Dually and is doing well.

Garden Boxes

These are the boxes that we built. We put them right up against the back of our chain link fence. I did this for a few reasons. 1) it was fairly level 2) it is one less side that I have to fence in 3) the chain link will be great for the peas and cucumbers to climb up.

The 2 farthest ones are already planted. The first is solid onions. It is a variety. Reds, Yellows, and Whites.

The 2nd one is 1/2 beets and 1/2 asparagus. The asparagus won't produce this year, and won't be very much even next year, but they will be established. I hadn't planned on planting asparagus, but it was added in by Dan.

So this leaves me with 6 boxes to plant yet.
1 will be cucumbers
1 will be pumpkins
1 will be peppers
1 will be herbs
1 will be carrots and lettuce
1 will be tomatoes
And that takes care of it all!! I need to sneak some peas in one or two of them as well. I feel like I need a few more boxes!!

The cucumbers and pumpkins are going to be fenced in seperate from the rest in an effort to contain them a bit.

I did pick up some dried blood today to spread along the outside of the fence. It helps to keep the rabbits and deer out. If it doesn't work, we may end up having rabbit stew one night!!!!!

What a beautiful day!!

We had a busy day here yesterday. I left my dad and father in law to build 6 garden boxes while I went and got a load of horse poop. When I got back, they were finished. We quick ate lunch and then started for the afternoon. They leveled the boxes, while I hauled wheelbarrows of poop back to the boxes. The neighbor attacked the 16 cubic yard pile of dirt in the driveway. He was leveling out a spot in his yard for garden boxes.

Once his spot was leveled, he started hauling cart loads of dirt back to our beds with his 4 wheeler and cart. My dad and I wheelbarrowed it while my father in law went to Home Depot to get a few 2 x 4's. We quickly filled all of our beds, but we still had a lot of dirt left to move.

We quickly built our neighbors 2 beds and then leveled and filled those. Within 26 hrs, we had moved a truckload of poop and all that dirt. The driveway was cleaned up. A total of 8 beds measuring 4 ft x 8 ft x 1 ft were done in our yard, 2 beds measuring 4 ft x 10 ft x 1 ft were done in our neighbors yard, Dan leveled out a low spot in our front yard, and we had graded around the neighbors shed.

How wonderful to have great neighbors and family to help out! I knew that I had to get it done before field work starts or I wouldn't have my dad's help.

Today, we put in our onion sets, beets, and asparagus. I hadn't planned on asparagus, but Dan requested it. I have one full bed of onions, and 1/2 bed of asparagus and beets. I need to get my peas in for an early crop, along with the carrots, but I had to run in and make a cake.

A cake? Why yes!! Our neighbors became US Citizens this week!! We are meeting in the cul da sac tonight for cake.

Dirt

I spent this afternoon calling around for prices of dirt. Yes, who would buy dirt? Well, when you live in town and your yard is on a clay hill, you buy dirt.

I learned that my garden boxes hold 1.2 cubic yards of dirt. 4ft x 8 ft = 32 square feet divided by 27 (b/c they are 12 inches deep). So, if I plan on having 7 boxes, I am looking at 8+ yds of dirt. One cubic yard is approx 2 scoops with the bobcat. This is a lot of dirt.

My first call was to Pahls Greenhouse, thinking they are nice and close (< a mile away). Their price for a garden blend: $32.99/yd + $55 delivery per truck load. Ah, no thanks.

Next, I sent some emails to places that I found on Craigslist.

While waiting for responses to those emails, I called no fewer than 5 more places for dirt. The cheapest was coming in at $22/yd + delivery. This was not looking good.

Finally an email came. $10/yd for black dirt and black peat. $75 for delivery, and they can deliver 14 cubic yds at a time. Bingo. This works out to a much better price. Esp considering our neighbors need dirt as well. They may not need as much as I do, but they need it for around a building and a few garden boxes as well. So we decided to order up a full 14 yds.

14 x $10 = $140 for dirt + $75 delivery = $215
$214/14 = $15.36 delivered per yard.

Now, even though this price is much better than the others, it still makes me a little sick. Good thing my dinner only cost me $1.91 tonight!!!

I will order dirt tomorrow to be delivered on Friday. Friday's plan is to build the rest of the beds and get a start on the dirt. Between Friday and Saturday, we should get it all done. I just want the dirt in the beds for a while before I plant so that it can warm up in the sun.

Tomorrow morning? We are picking up poop.

Found the Sutton Dodge Chuck Roasts for $1.49/lb at one store. No chuck steaks in sight and the stew meat was regular price.

Found Brining kits for .99 (Reg $8.99) in the meat department. There are 2 different flavors. A sage apple and an herb blend.

2 pks of Ducan Hines frosting were $1.75 (15% off). I have never seen them packed like that.

A friend found the 38 oz pks of Goldn Plump boneless/skinless breasts for $5.75. They are short dated (3/22) so it is most likely a YMMV type of deal. This is the type of thing that you won't find in the ad. My guess is, the butcher ordered too much for this weeks sale ($7.xx). Even though the packages are frozen in the back, they can't change the date on them. Too bad for Target, but great for those that find it. Regular price is $12.

Also grabbed some more mini bread loaves. I had every intention of buying a ton of these and freezing them, but my freezer is full to the brim. We are talking I couldn't even get a stick of butter in it after I put the chicken and roasts from today in. Thankfully, I have another large freezer secured, but it is not here at the moment.
